Garcia, Lewis, Randle El named wild card Players of the Week
New York, NY (Sports Network) - San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia,
New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis and Pittsburgh Steelers punt returner
Antwaan Randle El were named the NFL's Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams
Players of the Week for wild card weekend.
Garcia led the 49ers back from a 24-point deficit to a 39-38 win over the New
York Giants on Sunday. It was the second-largest comeback in NFL playoff
history. Only Buffalo's 32-point comeback against Houston on January 3, 1993
was bigger than Sunday's rally by the 49ers, who trailed 38-14 in the third
quarter.
Garcia, who completed 27-of-44 passes and was picked off once, also ran for 60
yards and a score. His 331 yards passing tied Joe Montana for the third-
highest playoff total in franchise history. Garcia led the 49ers to scoring
drives on the club's final four possessions, culminating the comeback with a
13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Tai Streets with a minute left.
Lewis played a big role in the team's 41-0 shutout victory over the
Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. The 12-year Jets veteran tied cornerback Ray
Mickens for the team-high in tackles for the day with seven. It was the first
playoff shutout for the Jets in team history.
Randle El helped the Steelers back from a 17-point third quarter deficit on
the way to a 36-33 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. With
Pittsburgh trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, Randle El fielded a punt
on the Steelers’ 34-yard line, cut to the outside and outran the Browns’ punt
coverage unit on a 66-yard touchdown return.
The touchdown was Randle El’s first in the NFL on a punt return. He returned a
kickoff 99 yards for a score during the regular season.
