Rays' Grieve hospitalized with infection

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Tampa Bay Devil Rays outfielder Ben Grieve spent Friday night in a Baltimore hospital to receive treatment for an infection at the base of his left thumb.

Grieve is batting .244 with no home runs and two RBI in 15 games for Tampa Bay this year. He had problems with the same thumb last season and missed a few games in April before it healed.

The soreness returned earlier this week and turned into an infection on Friday. Grieve took oral antibiotics before Friday's game with the Orioles, but was sent to Bayview Hospital after the contest and was treated more aggressively overnight.

According to Rays trainer Ken Crenshaw, Grieve will likely receive another 24 hours of treatment.

The club also placed first baseman Travis Lee on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a right oblique strain.
