Texas' Everett named AL Player of the Week

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Texas Rangers outfielder Carl Everett was named American League Player of the Week for the period ending April 20.

Everett hit a major league best six home runs, including homers in five straight, and drove in eight runs in six games last week. He also scored nine runs.

In Saturday's game against Oakland, Everett was hit in the head with a cell phone during his team's 12-2 loss. The incident occurred prior to the sixth inning when a fan in right field tossed the phone into the field of play. Everett was not injured, but did report the incident to umpires. The Athletics reported that the fan was arrested and heightened security was ordered in the outfield.

Other candidates for the award were Chicago's D'Angelo Jimenez, Carlos Lee and Bartolo Colon, Baltimore's Jorge Julio, New York's Mike Mussina, Raul Mondesi and Alfonso Soriano, Texas' Colby Lewis, Oakland's Eric Chavez and Barry Zito, and Cleveland's Jason Davis.
