National League Game Summary - Colorado at Philadelphia

(Thursday, April 24th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 9, Colorado 1

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Chase Utley collected his first major- league hit, a grand slam, and added a double to lead Philadelphia over Colorado, 9-1, as the Phillies completed a three-game sweep at Veterans Stadium.

Pat Burrell also homered and Jimmy Rollins and David Bell each scored a run on three hits apiece for the Phillies, who have won the last six meetings with Colorado, all at the Vet.

Randy Wolf (3-1) earned the victory as he bounced back from his first loss of the season against Atlanta. In this one, the lefthander only allowed one run on four hits and four walks, while striking out eight in 7 2/3 innings.

Jay Payton hit a home run for the Rockies, who entered the series with a three-game win streak.

The Phillies opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning and they cruised to the victory. Rollins led off with an infield single, got pushed to second on a walk to Ricky Ledee and came around when Bobby Abreu reached second base on a throwing error by Ron Belliard. Two batters latter, Jim Thome drove Ledee home with a sacrifice fly to left.

Aaron Cook (1-2) suffered the defeat after getting tagged for six runs in only four innings. Cook, who tossed his first career complete game in his last start, also allowed six hits and two walks.

Utley's grand slam came in the third to increase the Philadelphia margin to 6-0. Thome walked, Mike Lieberthal reached on a fielders's choice and Bell singled to load the bases, setting up Utley's two-out shot to right.

The sole Colorado run came in the fourth on Payton's fifth homer of the season.

Burrell led off the bottom of the fifth with his third homer of the season for the Phillies to give his team a 7-1 edge.

The Phillies capped off the scoring with two runs in the eighth. Utley doubled to start the frame and moved to third on a base hit by Rheal Cormier. Rollins then knocked in Utley with a double and Cormier crossed the plate on an Abreu single.

Game Notes

Utley played in his second big league game, starting at second base because Placido Polanco is on the disabled list...Utley became the first major leaguer with a grand slam for his first hit since Boston's Creighton Gubanich against Oakland in 1999. He is also the first Phillie to do so since Jim Command on July 11, 1954. Utley was also the first Phillie to hit a home run in his first at-bat since Marlon Anderson in September of 1998...It was the lowest amount of runs that Colorado has scored this season.
