American League Game Summary - Cleveland at Seattle
(Thursday, April 24th)
Final Score: Seattle 4, Cleveland 2
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Jamie Moyer allowed two runs over six innings
and Bret Boone delivered a two-run single to lift Seattle to a 4-2 win over
Cleveland and a sweep of the three-game series at Safeco Field.
Moyer (3-1) permitted six hits while walking two and striking out seven to
help the Mariners post their fourth straight victory and 10th in the last 12
overall.
Giovanni Carrara, Shigetoshi Hasegawa and Jeff Nelson each pitched a shutout
inning in relief. Nelson struck out two in the ninth for his first save of the
season, which preserved Seattle's first sweep of the Indians since July 9-11,
1993.
Omar Vizquel finished with three hits, including two doubles, and Casey Blake
added two hits, including a homer, for Cleveland, which has lost seven of its
last nine. Ellis Burks posted two hits.
Boone's two-run single in the fifth off reliever Jose Santiago rallied the
Mariners from a 2-1 deficit.
With one out, Dan Wilson singled and Ichiro Suzuki walked against Billy
Traber. The runners moved up a base on a ground out before both scored on
Boone's hit to center to give Seattle a 3-2 edge.
Traber (0-2), the Indians' emergency starter, absorbed the loss in his first
big league start. The lefthander was charged with three runs and three hits in
4 1/3 innings.
The Mariners extended their lead to 4-2 in the sixth on an RBI hit by Willie
Bloomquist. Greg Colbrunn singled and Carlos Guillen walked leading off the
inning. The Indians pulled off a double play when Jeff Cirillo struck out and
Colbrunn was thrown out trying to steal third, but Bloomquist rolled a 2-1
pitch to left, plating Guillen from second.
Cleveland loaded the bases in the seventh against Carrara, but Shane Spencer's
ground out ended the inning.
In the ninth, Vizquel's one-out hit off Nelson brought the tying run to the
plate, but Blake struck out and Burks grounded out to end the game.
Blake's second homer of the season put Cleveland ahead 2-0 in the top of the
first. Vizquel led off the game with a double and scored on the blast.
Seattle got within 2-1 in the bottom of the first. Randy Winn worked a one-out
walk, took second on a groundout and scored on a hit by Edgar Martinez.
Cleveland loaded the bases in the third with one out, but couldn't score.
Moyer got out of trouble by inducing a pop up and a strike out.
