American League Game Summary - Baltimore at Tampa Bay

(Friday, April 25th)

Final Score: Tampa Bay 2, Baltimore 1

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Seth McClung pitched six-plus innings of one- run ball in his first major league start to lead the Tampa Bay Devil Rays to a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a three-game set at Tropicana Field.

McClung (2-0) gave up only three hits and just one run to pick up his second major league victory. Travis Harper and Lance Carter combined for three hitless innings of relief for the Devil Rays, who have won three out of four. Carter earned his fourth save of the season in the process.

Rocco Baldelli went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win. Chris Truby and Carl Crawford also had two hits for Tampa Bay, which outhit the Orioles by a 9-3 margin.

Omar Daal (1-3) lasted six innings and gave up a pair of runs. He surrendered eight hits and walked three.

Gary Matthews Jr., B.J. Surhoff and Jay Gibbons got the only hits for the Orioles, who had won seven of nine coming in.

The Devil Rays scored twice in the first inning and made those two runs stand up. Terry Shumpert smacked a leadoff double and advanced to third on Rey Ordonez's sacrifice bunt. Baldelli followed with an RBI single into center field, but was picked off with Aubrey Huff at the plate. Huff worked a walk and later came around to score on Toby Hall's double to center that made it 2-0.

The Orioles finally got to McClung in the seventh inning. Surhoff singled to lead off the frame and Jeff Conine worked a walk to chase McClung from the game. Mike Venafro came on in relief and hit the only batter he faced, Gibbons, to load the bases.

Harper replaced Venafro and unleashed a wild pitch that allowed the runners to advance and Surhoff to score. Harper, though, got out of the inning after he got Tony Batista to ground out and Deivi Cruz to hit into an inning- ending double play to keep the score at 2-1.

Carter pitched a perfect ninth to close out the game.
